The Sam Dibrell Memorial Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist a graduating Alamo Heights student who needs additional funds for college. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials; the awarding student must show a genuine desire to obtain a college undergraduate degree.
My name is Michele. Steven and I are Sam & Hannah’s godparents. How wonderful that we are here together today in such great numbers to celebrate the Love that is Samuel. People connecting with each other in love is what Sam is all about.
We might begin by asking, “What’s in a name?” Well, “Samuel” is a Hebrew name that means “God hears” and in the Bible, the young Samuel was awakened from sleep by the voice of the Lord calling, “Samuel, Samuel!“ to which he replied, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!” (Or, as our Sam would say, “We ready!”) And the scripture says, “Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.” So the biblical Samuel was a great Communicator for God who made a huge impression on everyone he met. Sounds familiar, right? How fitting is our Sam’s name! It was no accident.
Sam Dibrell, a lifelong member of the Alamo Heights community, was a well-known standout wide receiver on the AHHS 2006 State Championship football team. He went on to play college football for the University of North Texas for two seasons, and remained there to finish his degree. Sam died on June 20, 2011, just before his 23rd birthday. He is remembered for his magnetic charisma that drew everyone to his warmth, humor, affection, generosity, compassion and kindness. Sam was equally loving and giving to all, knowing no barriers of race, status, wealth, or prestige, but seeing goodness in everyone. His outlook on life was consistently positive, always “seizing the day” with enthusiasm and joy, and leading others to experience the beauty of living. Rather than yielding to peer pressure or worldly opinion, Sam followed his heart and lived life fully as his own man, living each day to its fullest and teaching us all how to live. The Alamo Heights community was devastated by the automobile accident that took Sam from us, and this Scholarship fund was established in his honor, to be awarded annually to a graduating Senior.
